This old tradition of “root” is still practiced by many Charlestonians today. A most recent display of “root” products could have been seen in the old Cut Rate Drug Store, formerly on upper King Street near Cannon. In the rear of the store were pink love candles for snaring a wayward lover, or the black candles for bringing bad luck on someone you didn’t like, or one could just buy one of the many books or pamphlets on performing different “fixes” against someone. It is taught that when one meets a person with the power to do these different things, be respectful: good morning, good evening and goodbye. Don’t get curious, don’t ask questions, don’t deliver messages, and for God’s sake don’t deliver packages.
